The force with which the door was flung back startled her. The lamplight blinded her but she didnt dare look away. Didnt dare blink. Gilliad grabbed her physically, lifted her from the ground and laughed in her face. His spittle pebbled her face. He threw her back against the wall. Her voice broke on the sob that rose up through her tight throat and tried to strangle her. Shan murmured soft, soothing words in the old tongue until she stilled once more. She didnt pause. They werent going to line up and politely attack her one by one. The other four scrambled forwards, a ragged pack who, sensing danger, would rely on their numbers. She crouched low. Her clothes look considerably older: a big Salvation Army duffle coat is fastened up to the top above a knee-length skirt with shiny wellington boots. She makes Violet think of premature kittens – the litter that Midnight had last Spring – just bones and patchy fur, dead in a cardboard box.
