Shes my mate. Three words. That was all. The only words he could manage to bite out while controlling the surge of rage and betrayal. Rowan: And I told Jo to tell her about some alternative practitioners who might be able to help if she wanted to work through bad memories…, Rowan swallows. What did you hear? Is everything okay? Your father would expect me to look after you. How could she tell Elayne that? Shes a talker too, he continues, lighting the joint and inhaling until his eyes cross. You know those stories we tell when were drifting on the wave? The way that after a little while youre not telling anybody else but just straight talking to yourself. Dreaming aloud, I suppose. Yeah, she was one of those. Good company, like you say. Shell pushes through the trees, following the familiar path. He watches where he places his feet. His grandfather was a youngster when Steadfast Hookson sunk his exploratory mining shafts into the land here, honeycombing the earth in search of copper and tin. He found nothing of any use; just a network of tunnels and caves that looked set to cave in if any of the geologists or black-faced miners did so much as sneeze. Hed filled in the holes and let the woods grow back, but there had been plenty of times over the past hundred years when the earth had given way and the older trees had sunk into the earth as if being devoured. Hed warned Sixpence about it as he manoeuvred his campervan through the trees. The study of bugs in the gravesite and sometimes the corpse to judge how long a particular grave has existed or if the body was moved from another site. Don smiled. Thats the gist of what I got from the conversation. Theres also a question about whether the bones discovered actually belong to one person. Most bodies dont have two right arms. We’ll be asking for a full examination into that lab report you received. Seems like somebody there falsified records. He glared at Herald. “Get those cuffs off her.” I think you and I might be friends, says Eve, at last. She wets her finger and holds it up, looking past Violet to where the gathering wind is whipping up shark-fins of silvery water. She watches as the fine strands of hair begin to swirl and dance upon her crown. Anything? Her grandmothers money was all but gone, now safely behind several bars through town. Shed moved from place to place, always choosing establishments off the beaten track, those hidden away that would happily take her money. Shed slowed from the straight spirits to her usual bottles of Metz, but the tastebrought back better memories, deceitful memories, of fun times back in The Scholar. She washed them away with a gulp from a flask-size bottle of cheap vodka, bought from an off-license, just small enough to fit in the wide pocket of her hoodie. Dread flooded him, chill water in his veins. It was magic, a magic that called directly to her, and through her to him. I told her as much. Thats why were workshopping this particular story. Its educational. I’m just showing her how to check some facts. I know youre going to be cross with me for a little while. Youre going to grumble and bang things down and probably drink too much and eat the wrong things, and youre going to say I was a coward who took the easy way out. You’ll be right about all of it. All I ask is that you forgive me. I’m doing this for the right reasons. I’m letting go. I’m tired, eve. Tired of carrying all this horrible darkness inside me. I’m tired of the bad dreams. I’m tired of being scared. I have to do this so your last years aren’t for nothing. I have to do this so you’re free to grow old the way youwant to. I know you don’t believe in an afterlife or any of the hippy nonsense we spent so long looking into, but it means so much to me that we’re going to share the same patch of ground. It meant more to me than any wedding, though I reckon you were more likely to say yes to this than to any other question I popped. I want you to know, I understand. I won’t ever judge you, Eve. You had your reasons, I had mine. I’ll be waiting for you, forever grateful to be your friend. Hey Pearls of the World, I know you probably all say a prayer for the whole clan but can I ask you to say a special Hail Mary for poor Cormac, whos been gone 30 years now. For those of you who dont know, Cormac is the only son of Uncle Daeglan and Auntie Siobhan, from the Wexford branch of the family. Cormac went missing in June 1985 and despite Uncle Daeghlans best efforts, he’s never been found. The pain of it all put Siobhan inhospital, where she picked up a virus and died. She was too young. I have such lovely memories of her (we’re third cousins, on Dervla’s side) and I’ll always remember how welcome she made us when we visited them in England when I was still not much more than a girl. I don’t have many memories of Cormac but I remember a nice young man who let me play with his sister’s toys and didn’t mind me riding on his back like he was a horse! I still get a Christmas card from Uncle Daeghlan and I know it would mean a lot if you all included him in your prayers. I think we all know that Cormac isn’t coming home but some kind of closure would help everybody, I think. Much love, thankyou, God bless. If you kill me, Gilliad said, the magic will pass to her and it will consume her. Is that what you want, Shan? Until I have a child, Jeren is my heir—and to more than just this Holt. And until she gives me a child, shes tied here. So did she..
